Quick Summary of Don Quixote and Pilgrim's Progress - MJ

Since I actually read the first 50 pages of each of the first two selections, I think they deserve a mention. Because I didn't want to finish either book, I read chapter summaries at Sparknotes.com. I always want to know what happens at the end!

DQ decided to become a knight so he went out searching for acts of bravery. Isn't that what we all do every day? He was such an optimist and found that people actually helped him more than he helped anyone. Another truth, I think. Did DQ just pretend he did good deeds or did he really believe he had? I thought the best summary of this book came from Professor Van Dorn in The Quiz Show when he told his son, "If you want to be a knight, act like a knight." I want to play classical piano. I do play classical piano - at a beginner level. So I guess you could call me a classical pianist!

According to Sparknotes, Pilgrim's Progress has been translated into more languages than any other book except the Bible. It is said to be the most widely read book in English. A man named Christian goes on a journey of discovery, full of obstacles and temptation. He realizes that this trip is not all about the destination but how you get there. The final destination is death (Have a nice trip!). The book is like a sermon; we must overcome many obstacles on our journey through life. Amen to that!

"DQ decided to become a knight so he went out searching for acts of bravery."

Why is it when we decide to become something, we have to go search it out? It doesn't just happen.

It's a probable hypothesis then, that if you want something, you have to work for it as it won't just 'come' to you. Becoming 'something' takes work. That's a good lesson.

BTW -- one of my favorite songs is from the Man of La Mancha -- Richard Kiley "Impossible Dream". It's even on my IPOD!

Hi MJ and M ... I'm waiting for more book reveiws. I think I get on to this blog more than you do! I read Don Quixote as a freshman in Jr. college. I had to write a book review. All I remember writing was the relationship between Don Q and his sidekick, Sanchez was to show us that familiarity breeds contempt. I guess they were too close for comfort? That's my comment. I have always wanted to read Pilgrim'a Progress. Maybe I will SOMEDAY.

Update on DQ!

We got a new Veggie Tales and there was a segment called 'The Asparagus of La Manchu'. Boy, did I howl. Yes, the Asparagus is DQ and he and Pancho (the spaghetti squash – remember all the characters are veggies) run a cafe and DQ has the IMPOSSIBLE DREAM that a big fast food place is moving in and destroying his business.

Well, the Food Factory (slogan -- Food as big as your head!) moves across the way and he has to fight them. In the end, he decides he can't win so he starts serving breakfast (the FF doesn't) and he gets his customers back. I am not sure how this ties with the real DQ. There was a line about DQ 'laying off the salsa' -- was DQ a big drinker?
